Along with adjustable floor lamps are also table lamps that are often bought to match the look of the larger floor lamp. The table lamp will sometimes use a halogen bulb, but will usually use a normally “lamp” or light bulb as the table lamp is less likely to be used for intense lighting purposes and much more likely to be for lighting a particular area of the room.

The table lamp itself will normally match the design of the adjustable floor lamp. This will normally be bought in a pair but the table lamp itself will be lower in price due to the simpler design and size.

Table lamps can of course be bought separately and come in all shapes and sizes and can compliment the lighting in any room whether or not it is accompanied by an adjustable floor lamp.

A torchiere (tour-she-AIR or tour-SHARE), or torch lamp, is a lamp with a tall stand of wood or metal. Originally, torchieres were candelabra, usually with two or three lights. When it was first introduced in France towards the end of the 17th century the torchiere mounted one candle only, and when the number was doubled or tripled the improvement was regarded almost as a revolution in the lighting of large rooms.

Today, torchiere lamps use fluorescent or halogen light bulbs. Halogen torchieres usually have a TRIAC dimmer circuit built into the stem. The same circuit will not work in a fluorescent torchiere for the same reason that it won't work in other types of fluorescent applications: namely, because the pulsing will cause the arc in the fluorescent tube to become erratic. This is overcome by adjusting the pulse-width modulation in the electronic ballast instead; and most fluorescent torchieres use this method.

A lampshade is a fixture that covers the lightbulb on a lamp to diffuse the light it emits. Conical, cylindrical and other forms on floor-, desk- or table top-mounted as well as suspended lamp models are the most common and are made in a wide range of materials.

The term can also apply to the glass hung under many designs of ceiling lamp. Beyond its practical purpose, significant emphasis is also usually given to decorative and aesthetic features.

Adjustable loor lamps often use halogen bulbs and therefore benefit from lampshades. Various lampshade designs are avaliable for adjustable floor lamps, to either direct the light of diffuse it, depending on the application for using the light.

A halogen lamp is an incandescent lamp in which a tungsten filament is sealed into a compact transparent envelope filled with an inert gas and a small amount of halogen such as iodine or bromine.

The combination of the halogen gas and the tungsten filament produces a chemical reaction known as a halogen cycle (see below) that increases the lifetime of the bulb and prevents its darkening by redepositing tungsten from the inside of the bulb back onto the filament.

The halogen lamp can operate its filament at a higher temperature than a standard gas filled lamp of similar power without loss of operating life. This gives it a higher effiancy (10–30 lm/W). It also gives light of a higher color temperature compared to a non-halogen incandescent lamp. Alternatively, it may be designed to have perhaps twice the life with the same or slightly higher efficacy. Because of their smaller size, halogen lamps can advantageously be used with optical systems that are more efficient.

It is for the above reasons that halogen bulbs are usually used in adjustable floor lamps and table lamps due to the superior lighting that they produce.
 

When buying the most perfect adjustable floor lamp for your room its important to decide what the reason is for the placement of the light itself. By this I mean whether it is for functionality, appearance, or both.

Some people will purchase the light for appearance solely. The light can make a room and bring a space in the room to life. It can be the light itself or the stand which accomplishes this feat. The stand can be a piece of art, designed to be a showcase piece. Of course the customer can pay all sorts of money to have the privilege of this “artwork”. If it is a designer piece you will have to pay for the craft and time that the designer has invested in the piece.

Of course there are all types of adjustable floor lamp. There are all types of price range as well. If looks or artistic authenticity isn't of huge importance to you then a simple light with functionality over appearance would be the obvious way to go with many companies and manufacturers offering affordable lights with halogen bulbs perfect for reading lights or for other purposes.

There are a mix of the two of course. This is what the majority of people want. After all why have a floor lamp that doesn't suit the room when you can have the best of both worlds at an affordable price, even if it is mass produced and therefore cheaper to buy.
